Shocking story from Newport News, Virginia: A 6-year-old student is in custody after shooting a teacher at Richneck Elementary School. The teacher, described as a woman in her 30s, is now facing life-threatening injuries while authorities and a community seek answers.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew confirmed at 5:30 p.m. that a first grade student has been identified as the suspected shooter press conference. The boss also explained that the shooting was no accident.

The shooting reportedly took place around 2:00 p.m. No students were injured.

“All the children in the school were taken from the room with their teachers and escorted to the high school. They’re all safe in there,” Chief Drew said. “They are actually in there with advisers and officials. [They’re] cut it up a bit… It’s good to see her laugh. We want to make sure they are okay.”

“The police did a great job, they got here very, very quickly, along with the sheriff’s office. We make sure everyone is safe, we make sure everyone is accounted for,” said Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. “This is a long day for Newport News. We will make sure everyone is taken care of.”
