Bad news for the iPhone SE as the next iteration in the line has now reportedly been cancelled.

iPhone SE 2022

Apple has sent out instructions to suppliers effectively canceling the iPhone SE 4, according to a new report from Ming-Chi Kuo. It was previously reported that production of the next-generation iPhone SE could be postponed or discontinued. While this cancellation could change in the future, we shouldn’t expect a new mid-range smartphone from Apple any time soon. As a result, Apple’s in-house baseband processor has also been put on hold as it was reportedly set to make its debut in the upcoming iPhone SE.

Apparently, Apple’s in-house baseband processor was to be used for the first time in the iPhone SE 4. The company reportedly wanted to test its in-house chip in the mid-range iPhone and then port it to its high-end models like the iPhone 16 series. With the iPhone SE 4 now axed, it looks like Qualcomm is resuming its position of supplying baseband chips to Apple for now. Previous reports said Qualcomm would lose some of its business if Apple switched to its own baseband silicon, but it should now be in a much stronger position for years to come.

While mid-range phone sales have never been great, Apple’s latest move may have been prompted by current and future economic conditions. While that may be the case, it also confirms that despite the outcry from people who wanted a smaller, more powerful device, people just weren’t opening their wallets to this type of smartphone. Colleague Ben Sin elaborated on this in his recent report, explaining that the only reason these types of products exist is because the US doesn’t have much competition from smartphone makers in Asia, which tend to produce excellent, to produce cheaper smartphone models that pack more bang for buck.

Both the iPhone Mini and the iPhone SE have been decommissioned for the time being. But Apple has plenty of products ready for 2023. While some products are expected, this year could be a very interesting one for Apple as it transitions more of its products to use its own silicon and indeed introduces the iPhone into the modern age with the introduction of USB-C.
