David Beckham’s playing career may be over, but one Premier League club is set to add a Beckham to their ranks this season after Romeo, the former England captain’s son, joined Brentford.

The young Beckham made 20 appearances for Inter Miami II – the reserve side of his father’s Major League Soccer franchise – in the MLS Next Pro League last season.

The 20-year-old previously spent time at Arsenal academy before being sacked in 2015 and joined Inter Miami II in 2021 when the team was still known as Fort Lauderdale CF.

In a statement released on Friday, Brentford revealed the winger would join his B team by the end of the season.

“Brentford are delighted to announce the signing of Romeo Beckham from Inter Miami CF on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season,” the club said.

“The 20-year-old will join Neil MacFarlane’s B-Team for the remainder of the season to continue his development as he makes a temporary move from the MLS club. The move is subject to international approval.”

MacFarlane revealed Beckham had been training with the club since the end of the MLS Next Pro season, saying: “He came to us from Inter Miami with the aim of working with us during their final season.

“Romeo made an incredible contribution, he really settled into the culture and the group that he’s become a big part of. I love his standards and his behavior on and off the pitch.”

The new recruit said he is enjoying his opportunity, telling Brentford’s website: “I’m very proud and very happy to be here.

“I came here in the beginning to keep fit in the off-season. Then came the chance to be loaned here and I’ve never been so excited.”

Last July, Inter Miami manager Phil Neville defended his decision to use Beckham – as well as his own son Harvey – in a friendly against Barcelona, saying both had “deserved the right” to play in a game that started with 6 : 0 ended defeat for the MLS team.
