Best Action/Adventure Game
God of War Ragnarok
We had a feeling that God of War Ragnarok was going to be great, but this title blew us away completely. The Santa Monica Studio development team proves they understand this series and what makes it great. Its story is packed with emotion and action, but the exploration and game mechanics really made us look forward to playing it until the last few hours. It’s going to be really difficult for any release in this genre to do better.
Best JRPG
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is more than just a JRPG. It’s a masterpiece that will surely go down as one of the best games in the history of the Xenoblade series. It combines what Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 did so right, while also fixing many of the issues its predecessors had. We can’t stress enough how you absolutely should play this game. Make sure you set aside a cool 80 hours though, because the world of Aionios is vast and there’s no shortage of things to do.
best adventure
Sonic Frontiers
Sonic Frontiers was a promise of the long-awaited evolution of the series, and it was kept. Fans could experience the franchise’s first attempt at an open-world adventure with RPG mechanics like a skill tree and character upgrades. The sense of speed is exhilarating, and the strong narrative and writing keep the journey captivating. With a formula like this, the future of Sonic’s video game outings seems bright and promising.
Best Visual Novel
Digimon survive
No one expected the next best Digimon adventure to be delivered by the visual novel genre, but here we are. Digimon survive gave fans a unique experience by bringing a dose of reality to the digital world. Characters could shape their Digimon’s personality based on their responses in dialogue, which kept our eyes glued to the screen. Although there is an additional tactical RPG system here, the story will surely get you in the way of how this digi-venture plays out.
Best Mobile Game
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent
Sure, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent has been available in Japan for two years now, but with the western release we were excited to finally get into Orsterra. The story takes place before Octopath Traveler and features the original game’s signature multi-level systems. We found the quality of this title to stand out from the other mobile games released this year.
Best Fighting Game
King of Fighters XV
King of Fighters XV was under a lot of pressure to give fans an experience worthy of such a long development period. Luckily for us, the wait was worth it. This is a series that offers players a respectable roster of fighters that suit all playstyles. In addition, the numerous modes kept us playing and honing our skills. Since launch, the online experience has been updated, with the promise of DLC characters along the way. I mean the inclusion of Mai Shiranui should be reason enough to play.
Best Otome Game
Variable barricade
Undeniably, Variable Barricade set the bar incredibly high when it was released in the early months of 2022. It featured a voiced protagonist, an engaging comedic story, and a very interesting flowchart system. Even after other releases like Paradigm Paradox and Lover Pretend came along, they just couldn’t keep up with Hibari and her cast of absolutely hilarious suitors.
Best BL Game
Slow damage
Nitro+Chiral show once again that when it comes to the BL genre, as always, they just bang it out of the park. Slow Damage tells a compelling story that is simply mesmerizing to read on for hours while watching the protagonist Towa peer deep into other people’s desires. What’s more, this dark, sombre perspective on the future has real depth, as the city of Shinkoumi is portrayed as that “place you go when you have a dark secret to hide,” and that’s made even clearer thanks to the excellent translation by Molly Lee.
Best Yuri Game
please be happy
Please Be Happy was released towards the end of 2022 after being teased by Yuri visual novel fans for a number of years. The narrative delivers one that touches on fantasy and friendship with a healthy dose of romance. The slice-of-life nature of the story allows for some moments of drama, but this story will have you begging for a happy ending. The illustrations are also notable, as each character features a soft design that only Studio Elan can deliver.
Best H Game
evenicle 2
Give us an RPG with the promise of meeting busty ladies from the character designer of the Senran Kagura series and you can probably imagine that we will fall in love with this game. The story is complete with branching storylines and numerous hijinks making it a standout release in the H-genre. If you’re looking for a fun way to sink hours into a kinky adventure, then you’ve found it.
Best Narrative
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES – NirvanA Initiative
Uchikoshi’s team has created another great narrative masterpiece with the release of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES – nirvanA initiative. Players experience a new case as they take on the roles of special agents Mizuki and Ryuki. There are so many remarkable characters and wonderful adventure elements in this game that make the whole experience unforgettable. Every moment of this adventure makes it harder to put down the controller as you delve into the Somnium world and unravel the mystery of the half-body serial murders.
Best Soundtrack
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 soundtrack once again showcases the skill of composer Yasunori Mitsuda, with phenomenal soundtracks for you to listen to on all fronts. From the cinematic soundtracks to the absolute bop of the battle music, it would feel like a real disservice if it didn’t win that award, if we’re being honest.
Best Indie Game
Chained Echoes
Chained Echoes is by far the most surprising hit of 2022. Inspired by classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, this turn-based indie RPG features an outstanding narrative with excellent character growth, grandiose world building and political intrigue. The combat system is also one of the best balanced takes in the genre, and the soundtrack is great. If you’re even a loose fan of turn-based games, Chained Echoes is an absolute must.
Best Port
13 Guardians: Aegis Rim (Switch)
Before this port came along, people used to say that 13 Sentinels would never leave the PlayStation 4. Well, they got a damn shock when the Switch port was announced on a Japanese broadcast. that’s for sure, and that’s not without reason. This amazing game from Vanillaware not only runs very smoothly on the Nintendo Switch, but when push comes to shove, the game doesn’t look like a PowerPoint slideshow. The amount of optimization done here deserves respect.
Best Remake/Remaster
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion
After years of being confined to the PSP, we finally got Crisis Core in the form of a remaster for modern platforms, allowing fans both new and old to delve deep into the legacy of who wielded the Buster sword before Cloud and us also not only offers a glimpse into an earlier node of the Final Fantasy VII compilation timeline, but also lets us understand how popular and important Zack Fair is to the series.
Best DLC/Expansion
Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course
Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course is an ambitious DLC that feels completely different than the base game. With several brand new boss fights on a new island and a new playable character, development studio MDHR has excelled in every way imaginable. Some of the best boss fights in gaming are here, requiring intense telegraph and pattern perception. It’s no surprise that it won this award.
Best Developer
BySoftware
If that’s the biggest thing Elden ring If you’re not convinced that FromSoftware is one of the best game developers of the past year, then perhaps unveiling a new Armored Core will do the trick. For years, FromSoftware has innovated in the action genre to create unique and challenging experiences by putting players’ skills at stake. We look forward to whatever this team has in store, but this has definitely been their year.
Best Publisher
Annapurna Interactive
Annapurna Interactive has a knack for creating a wonderful catalog of published titles across different genres. Their vision for a creative portfolio is evident in every video game released. This year they delivered a game about a cat called Stray. While some studios might overlook this premise, Annapurna Interactive gave it the marketing and attention it needed to get it onto players’ wish lists so the developer could focus on creating an unforgettable experience. For this, Annapurna Interactive received this year’s award as the best publisher.
The most shocking revelation of 2022
Armed Fantasy / Penny Blood
Let’s be honest. How long have we been waiting for a sequel to the popular Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts series? When this ambitious double Kickstarter project was announced, we were surprised that the developers of these IPs would create a brand new spiritual successor. We may not see this game until 2025, but once it hits shelves, rest assured of one thing: we’re super excited to get the chance to play it.
The most anticipated game of 2022
Final Fantasy XVI
The latest entry in the Final Fantasy series has earned its glorious victory as the most anticipated game of 2023. Some of our staff are looking forward to trying it out, especially as it will be a more mature title. And to think that it also won our Reader’s Choice Award, that just goes to show how passionate we are about this game. Yoshi-P’s team has long earned a lot of credit for saving Final Fantasy XIV from its demise, so we all can’t wait to see what his team is brewing in a new mainline entry.
Game of the year 2022
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
The announcement and arrival of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was so shockingly sudden, especially given that the release date was pushed forward of all things. Thankfully, that quick start didn’t translate into poor quality, as this seeming conclusion to the series was positively received by fans and critics alike. From improved voice controls, an overhauled combat system with Jobs, and a dense and vast open world, this entry is undoubtedly one of the Switch’s biggest hits.
