President Biden was greeted Sunday in El Paso, Texas, by Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who earlier in the day criticized the administration for failing to communicate with local officials about the president’s trip to the southern border until the night before .
Abbott shook hands with Biden on the pavement and handed him a letter from Abbott addressed to Biden criticizing him for the visit.
“Your visit to our southern border with Mexico today is $20 billion short and two years late,” the letter said.
Texas Democratic Representatives Henry Cuellar, Veronica Escobar and Vicente González also welcomed the President, along with Democratic El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also traveled to Texas with the President.
Biden then visited the Bridge of the Americas port, where Customs and Border Protection officers lined up to meet him.
Sunday is Biden’s first trip to the southern border since taking office. Republicans have berated Biden for weeks for not visiting him sooner and have criticized his administration for border policies they believe are too lenient.
Earlier Sunday, Abbott accused the Biden team of failing to communicate with local officials about the president’s visit to El Paso.

“Listen, Joe Biden hasn’t called me this whole time. He hasn’t called me yet [did] his staff will call and let us know by last night, either about his visit or to invite us. We happened to receive an email from one of my employees asking if I would be there to meet him on the tarmac,” Abbott said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on the plane to El Paso that Abbott was invited and she understood he would be at the airport when Biden landed.
