There was reason the mood at the Buffalo Bills facility was better than it had been for the last few days. The team found that Damar Hamlin was conscious and able to communicate.

Hamlin couldn’t speak, but he could hold hands with loved ones and write down what he was thinking. With the news of Hamlin’s improved condition and after speaking to his father earlier that day, Sean McDermott and Josh Allen spoke to the media for the first time since Monday night’s scary scene.

What they saw is still raw, and there were moments when both men had to pause before their emotions overwhelmed them in front of the media. McDermott thanked every person he could think of who had lent a helping hand either now or in the minutes and days since.

It was clear to both men that things haven’t been going as usual with the Bills this week. The players have been thinking deeply over the past few days, leaning on each other both emotionally and physically. Thursday’s news, however, lifted spirits throughout the organization significantly. When Hamlin first woke up, the doctors said he wanted to know who won the game.

“We heard this news this morning and there is nothing that can be said to make our day worse,” Allen told the media. “We are very happy for him and his family. We just want to love him. So the next opportunity we get, I don’t know when it’s going to be, if we’re going to see him anytime soon, but it’s going to be great.”

While the team is in better headspace, they’re still grappling with one of the toughest parts of life on and off the football field. The Bills need to get back to work. There is one game left in the regular season schedule, then the playoffs.

However, they received some much-needed words of encouragement to get the motivation to really focus on football. Actually, it was more of an order than an encouragement.

“Mario [Damar’s father] He spoke to us as a team and the things that he kind of told us and really didn’t tell us that he asked us to do,” Allen told the media. “You can’t comply with his request to get out there and charge forward to the best of your ability.”

That’s the current status of the Buffalo Bills. They received some news that they had hoped for and prayed for. Your team-mate, whom you witnessed being given life-saving care on Monday, opened his eyes and moved a part of his body. This teammate’s dad wants them to step onto the field like the pros they’ve been all season.

It’s going to be an emotional Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. There will be much cheering, but certainly a few tears as well. It won’t be the typical scene for an NFL team chasing the top seed in its conference playing its last game of the season at home.

That day may clear itself when it comes, but for now, Damar Hamlin is conscious. That’s cause for celebration, stretching from Niagara Falls to San Diego.
