CHICAGO (WLS) — Northwest Side City Councilman Roberto Maldonado will not stand for re-election this year.
The city council for the 26th district submitted a resignation from the candidacy in the afternoon.
Maldonado has represented portions of Humboldt Park, Logan Square, West Town, and Hermosa on Chicago City Council since 2009.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot released a statement saying, in part, “For nearly three decades, Alderman Roberto Maldonado has done a tremendous job representing and advocating for residents of our city’s West Side. … Alderman Maldonado’s empathetic approach to public service has only deepened throughout his 13 years as a 26th Ward alderman — as evidenced by his passionate advocacy of more affordable housing and his push for anti-gentrification laws to protect his constituents from displacement. I thank him for his years of passionate leadership in the service of this great city.”
