Damar Hamlin released his first statement after his horrific on-field collapse during the Jan. 2 game between his Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. Damar, 24, went into cardiac arrest after attacking Bengal’s Tee Higgins and was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition. On Saturday, January 7th, Hamlin spoke for the first time since the event and made an emotional statement about his Instagram.

“When you bring true love into the world, it comes back to you three times as much,” he wrote alongside a photo album of himself. “The love was overwhelming, but I am grateful for every single person who prayed and reached out for me. After that, we brought the world back together. If you know me, you know this is only gone to make me stronger. On a long way keep praying for me!”
Hamlin collapsed in the first quarter of the Bills-Bengals game. Damar tackled Tee Higgins in what seemed a normal collision. Higgins led with his right shoulder, ESPN noted, which gathered with Hamlin’s chest. After the punch, Damar got up and stayed on his feet for three seconds before falling to the ground. Sports coaches rushed to his aid and began resuscitation. Hamlin was given oxygen and was taken off the field 16 minutes after collapsing.
“If head trauma appears to be present, that would open the door to other things,” said Dr. Rigved Tadwalkar, a cardiologist at Providence Saint John Health Center in Santa Monica the Los Angeles Times about Hamlin’s injury. while dr Tadwalkar was careful not to diagnose the Bills player remotely, the medic said the damage had the hallmarks of catastrophic chest trauma.

“But outside [head trauma]’ the doctor told the LA Times, ‘it would probably be one of these things: either he had some kind of undiagnosed condition and this was some sort of routine game that pushed things over the edge, or he was perfectly fine and had Unlucky and had the wrong type of injury at the wrong time, causing structural or electrical heart problems.
The ordeal sparked horror from both teams, who worried about their NFL counterparts. The Bills knelt together in a circle after Hamlin was removed from the field and the defense returned to the field to continue play, per ESPN. fans on Twitter noted that Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was warming up to resume play (the NFL denies they planned to resume play.)
“Honestly, that aspect never crossed my mind or theirs internally,” NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said during a conference call following the incident. “We asked that [referee] shawn [Smith] communicate with both [Zac] Taylor and Coach [Sean] McDermott brings the players together. Honestly, it was just a matter of getting a pulse of where they were at that particular time.”
Shortly after the incident, the Hamlin’s Chasing M’s Foundation received over three million in donations. The Foundation’s Toy Drive, established on GoFundMe In 2020, $2,500 was committed to a daycare center in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. As of January 3, it had over $3.7 million from over 141,000 donations.
