Gareth Bale is retiring from football aged 33 after setting a Welsh record 41 international goals.

Bale’s last game was a 3-0 defeat by England at the World Cup on 29 November, his 111th cap.

“My decision to retire from international football was by far the hardest of my career,” he said. Bale said in a statement Monday. “My journey on the international stage has not only changed my life but also who I am. Being fortunate to be Welsh and to be chosen to play for Wales and be captain of Wales has given me something like nothing I have experienced before. I am honored and honored to be a To be able to play a part in the history of this incredible country, to have felt the support and passion of the Rote Wand and to have been to unexpected and amazing places together.”

Bale also said he is retiring from club football. He scored 53 goals in the Premier League and 81 in La Liga and finished last season helping LAFC win the Major League Soccer title. Bale has won five Champions League titles, three Spanish league titles, a Copa del Rey and a League Cup.

“I am full of anticipation for the next step in my life” he said. “A time of change and transition, an opportunity for a new adventure.”

Bale made his debut for Wales on 27 May 2006 in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago and the speedy winger helped Wales reach the semi-finals of the 2016 Euros, where they succeeded lost 2-0 to Portugal.

Wales qualified for Euro 2020 lost to Denmark in the round of 16then qualified for his second World Championship and first since 1958. Bale equalized in the 1-1 opener against the United States. Wales then gave up two goals in added time of the second half in a 0:2 against Iran.

Bale broke the previous Welsh record of 28 goals set by Ian Rush. Bale’s performances are also a Welsh record. He has been named Welsh Player of the Year six times.

“How do I describe what it means to me to be a part of this country and this team? How do I articulate the impact it has had on my life? Shirt?” said Bale. “My answer is that there’s no way I can possibly do these things justice in words. But I know that every person involved with Welsh football feels the magic and affects it in such a powerful and unique way will, so I know you feel what I feel without using any words.”

He joined Los Angeles FC from Real Madrid last June and helped his new team win the MLS championship by equalizing in the 128th minute of the final. LA went on to beat Philadelphia on penalties.

Bale played for Southampton (2006-07), Tottenham (2007-13, 2020-21) and Real Madrid (2013-22).

He joined Real Madrid after scoring a career-high 21 Premier League goals for Spurs in 2012/13. He scored double-digit league goals in four of his first five seasons with Madrid.
