Ginny & Georgia Season 2 is filled with big moments for the titular duo as they journey through a shared journey and separate challenges.
Like Season 1, this latest chapter in the Netflix drama ends on a cliffhanger, leaving fans with many burning questions. Don’t fret, however, because we caught up with showrunner Debra J. Fisher, who dished out the biggest twists and turns of Season 2 and offered suggestions on where the show might go next should Ginny & Georgia return for Season 3 should be.
Below, she breaks down some of the questions viewers may have left after the shocking end of season two, which sees Georgia (Brianne Howey) arrested for the murder of Cynthia’s (Sabrina Grdevich) husband at their wedding to Mayor Paul Randolph (Scott Porter). would. , as well as Ginny’s (Antonia Gentry) outlook after a turbulent journey personal and romantic. See what Fisher had to share below, but beware of major spoilers.
Where do Ginny & Marcus stand?
Ginny and Marcus (Felix Mallard) were both going through intense battles with mental illness when she worked with a therapist to try to stop the burn and he fell into a deep depression. While the on-again-off-duo can’t keep their distance for long as they keep bouncing back on each other, is their hope for a future for their relationship? Fisher admits, “These are characters who are first loves. They lost their virginity to each other,” she adds. When it comes to a potential third season, Fisher says, “Anything is possible, but where we ended it, there are mental health issues that he needs to address. So, I think we showed that they will always be in each other’s lives in some way. Even if it’s not romantic.”
As viewers will recall, Ginny learned more about the depth of Marcus’ depression from his sister Max (Sara Waisglass), leading her to swear that she would be there for him as a friend. “But I would say as an endgame, anything goes,” Fisher suggests, “even if they’re not together right now.”
What will become of Georgia?
A lot has happened this season, especially when it comes to Georgia and her many secrets that have come to light. Of all the things she could be arrested for, viewers might not have anticipated the death of Cynthia’s terminally ill husband. While Austin (Diesel La Torraca) witnessed his mother choke the man while he was playing hide and seek with his bullying friend Zach (Connor Laidman) at Cynthia’s house, he never spoke of the event, even if he unconsciously said it out loud, as Georgia did was dragged away in handcuffs after her marriage to Paul.
“Movie-wise, we love ending seasons with cliffhangers,” Fisher enthuses. “Georgia being arrested, being driven out in a squad car, and being followed by Austin is just a wonderful callback [Season 1’s cliffhanger]…she’s such an incredibly nuanced and layered character. We’ve learned so much more about her past through the flashbacks, and her darkest secrets are all being brought to the surface.”
While Georgia refrained from telling Paul about killing her ex-husbands Kenny (Darryl Scheelar) and Anthony (Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll) — she deliberately poisoned Kenny and accidentally overdosed Anthony — she finally confessed to some of her biggest ones secrets and he still accepted you. The only question is, will he accept her now that she’s been arrested for a murder no one knew she would be charged with?
“They really love each other,” Fisher notes. “In Georgia’s eyes, she took off with PI Cordova [Alex Mallari Jr.]and [she] gets arrested for something no one saw coming. And I love that. I think that just speaks to the nature of our show. It’s so nuanced and complicated and one minute you’re laughing and the next minute you’re being arrested for murder.”
How does Gil fit in?
Austin’s father, Gil (Aaron Ashmore), reappeared in the Miller family’s life this season, and viewers gradually discovered his abusive behavior towards Georgia in their previous relationship. His presence provided an interesting dynamic shift, not only between himself and Georgia, but also between Gil and the loves of Georgia’s life, Zion (Nathan Mitchell) and Paul.
While Georgia was “always on the move” in Season 1, says Fisher, “now we see her putting down roots in Wellsbury, planning a wedding and what that means to her. When Gil shows up, we can see that something happened between them in the past, and then through the flashback we can really reveal that dark past between the two of them.”
“Everyone’s fighting a battle that you can’t see, and I think that really speaks to Georgia and her past and who she is,” adds Fisher. “It really shows that Georgia has gotten off her game a little bit because Ginny knows she’s a killer, and now Gil shows up.” Ultimately, Fisher says, it’s “at the point where Georgia, Ginny and Austin are all back together [she’s] able to pull himself together and marry Paul.”
But just because Cynthia stopped Gil from gaining access to apartments in Wellsbury doesn’t mean he’s out of the picture. Should the show return for a third season, only time will tell if Gil will play a role in the future, but he certainly shook things up with his presence.
Is Zion the only one who knows the whole story?
Ginny’s father may not know about Georgia’s murders, but Zion clearly knows, loves and accepts her for who she is. This was evident in season 2 flashbacks as he witnessed Georgia shooting her abusive stepfather. “He knows things about her that most men don’t,” explains Fisher. “He doesn’t know she’s a killer, but they share a deep past.”
“In Season 1, Zion wanted the family to be together, he was very committed to that, and then he saw Georgia with Paul and knew that’s the life that took her to Wellsbury before, that’s what.” she wanted,” explains Fisher. Ultimately, Zion resigned to allow Georgia to continue on the path she wanted. “They share something very special. They always will. But we wanted to show her how to move romantically. But we also wanted to show that Zion meets a woman [he could have] a very strong relationship with.”
Is Marcus’ knowledge a bad thing?
Before reconciling with her mother, Ginny expressed her concerns about Georgia’s behavior to Marcus, essentially telling him that she had killed her late husband Kenny. In a scene between Georgia and Marcus towards the end of season two, he mentions the secret and promises he won’t tell anyone, but it’s clear that Georgia is not comforted by the mood. But if fans know anything about Marcus at this point, it’s that he’s not a rat in that sense.
“At that moment, at the end of Season 2, it’s not going to come into play,” Fisher says, but adds, “Anything can happen in Season 3 play,” Fisher continues, hinting at what could, should, come next Netflix renew the show. “We don’t have the green light for a season 3 yet,” she clarifies.
Where does Cynthia stand?
Cynthia, a Wellsbury mother, didn’t get along with Georgia for most of seasons 1 and 2, but the couple shifted their dynamic once it was clear their sons had become friends. Although Cynthia believed Georgia to be a criminal and actively opposed her in the community, Cynthia opened up to her in a way she didn’t to other characters, and this time brought additional depth to her role. The pair even seems to be going from enemies to enemies at the very least, but will that little bit of good be tarnished when Cynthia realizes Georgia killed her husband out of mercy?
“I don’t know if it’s like they’re real friends or enemies, but they’re definitely spending time together and they’re coming to a very different place,” Fisher says of Season 2. “I think on the surface they would say that become friendly. I don’t know if Cynthia would say that, but those were some of my favorite scenes this season. Just letting them have a drink together because Georgia tried to manipulate her earlier in the season and Cynthia called her. I love the honesty between them.”
In all honesty, fans will need a third season to see how things would play out after Georgia’s arrest. “I’m just saying Cynthia doesn’t know yet that Georgia has been arrested for her husband’s murder. So Season 3 is going to be a very wild ride if we can get it.” We raise our glasses to that.
