Motor City, here comes Deputy US Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant)! The lawman, who was last seen fleeing Appalachia in the acclaimed drama Justified (2010-2015), expands his presence in the Elmore Leonard universe with Justified: City Primeval.

The FX spinoff is based on the late crime writer’s City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. The dark novel is set in Motor City and stars local cop Ray Cruz, but in the series (premiering Summer 2023), Givens is the protagonist and Cruz (Paul Calderon) is a retired homicide detective.

“Tim started banging the drum to bring Raylan into this world,” says Executive Producer Michael Dinner, “and that’s how this mashup started.”

In Justified: City Primeval, the timeline has shifted 10 years and Raylan is now a part-time father to teenage Willa (played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian). In Detroit, he meets Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), “one of Elmore’s great antagonists,” says Dinner.

Unlike Justified’s Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), this killer “has no moral code,” says executive producer Dave Andron. “He’s a more unpredictable, dangerous villain for Raylan – who’s a little slower in the draw now.”

Also in the Marshal’s orbit: Carolyn Wilder (Oscar-nominated Aunjanue Ellis), Mansell’s sexy attorney with whom Raylan quickly falls in love.

“There are three characters on this collision course,” Dinner summarizes, “and one wonders, if one of them, who will get out alive.”

Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Marin Ireland, Norbert Leo Butz and Victor Williams also star in the spin-off. Andron and Dinner will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Olyphant, Justified creators Graham Yost, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly, Taylor Elmore, Chris Provenzano and Peter Leonard. The drama is a joint production of Sony Pictures Television, FX Productions and MGM Television.
