Jack Grealish admitted he expected Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to collect his low cross that led to Manchester City’s winner at Stamford Bridge.

In a low-key affair in the Premier League on Thursday night, Grealish’s drilled pass across the six-yard box found Riyad Mahrez and he tapped the back post to narrow the gap between City and Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points.

While the two forwards played well, Chelsea supporters bemoaned Kepa’s lack of effort to deflect the ball out of harm’s way when it seemed within reach.

It’s a sentiment Grealish seemingly agreed with when he told Sky Sports he thought the Spaniard would cut the cross before it reached Mahrez at the far post.

“I spoke to Riyadh [Mahrez], and he figured the keeper would eventually get it. And me too. As I crossed it, I thought of Erling [Haaland] must be somewhere – I just hit the space. And I asked him, ‘Where have you been’ and he said he retired.”

In his post-match interview, Grealish also revealed how difficult it was for him to adjust to life at City, saying: “When I came here to be honest it was so much harder than I thought it would be.

“In my head I thought I was going to go to the team that sits at the top of the league and I was going to score that many goals and assists and obviously that’s not the case. A lot of teams tend to play us and it was not the case with Villa.”
