Barcelona president Joan Laporta has indicated keen interest in Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves and seems to indicate the club will dip into the transfer market depending on what happens to captain Sergio Busquets at the end of the season.
Busquets is out of contract in the summer weeks before his 35th birthday and has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Miami. He previously set a deadline in February to decide whether to stay at Camp Nou or move on.
If Busquets leaves, Barça will have to replace a player who has been anchored in midfield since 2009 – Franck Kessie is expected to leave and the squad’s other midfielders play other roles.
Neves has spent almost five years at Wolves since his surprise move from Porto in 2017 but is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders.
“Ruben Neves is a top player but it’s part of private conversations. Busquets has to decide about his future, he has proposals from MLS and we are looking at options for the future,” Laporta told Cadena SER.
“Xavi will decide who is the right player for us.”
The interest seems to be reciprocated by Neves.
“If you ask in general terms, all players want to play for Barca!” he told Canal 11 in October. “It’s one of the best clubs in the world. It’s a privilege for me to be associated with this team.”

Neves, who previously captained Porto at a young age, was ready to leave Wolves for a while to take on a new challenge and play at a higher level.
90min reported in April last season that alongside Barcelona there was interest in Neves from Arsenal, Tottenham, Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, although the latter signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro in the summer.
