Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz entered the office of GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Monday night with a list of demands. Among them: Chairing a key House Forces subcommittee.

McCarthy declined the offer. That decision set in motion a chain of events that led to Gaetz and McCarthy standing on the House floor in open confrontation late Friday night. Gaetz, McCarthy’s most staunch opponent, dramatically denied the California Republican the final vote he needed to become Speaker – then Gaetz and the last of the holdouts abruptly changed course, allowing McCarthy to win the Speaker’s gavel on his 15th attempt .

Chaos broke out in the House before the final vote, after Gaetz waited until the end of the 14th ballot to vote present when McCarthy needed another yes vote. Stunned after he thought he had the votes, McCarthy faced his most embarrassing defeat yet. His allies circled Gaetz to find a way forward. McCarthy soon made his way to the discussion and began engaging Gaetz as well.

After McCarthy, dejected, walked away from Gaetz, House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers approached the call and pounced on Gaetz, who had to be physically restrained by Republican Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina. Rogers, an Alabama Republican who earlier in the week warned GOP dissidents that they would lose their committee assignments, told Gaetz he was “done” for continuing to destroy the speaker’s voice.

Nearby, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia tried to convince Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana, another McCarthy holdout, to pick up her cell phone and speak to former President Donald Trump, who was on the phone.

Finally, for the 14th time, the house clerk announced that no one had the votes to be speaker. Republicans moved to adjourn the chamber until Monday. As the voting timer ticked down, 218 Republicans had voted yes, a majority that would have sent McCarthy home for the weekend and left the House paralyzed by Gaetz and his allies.

But with less than a minute until the vote, Gaetz walked to the front of the room and grabbed a red index card to change his vote to an adjournment. Gaetz approached McCarthy and the two exchanged a few words. McCarthy then raised his hand and yelled, “One more!” as he triumphantly walked to the front of the room to change his voice as well. It was the GOP leader’s final trial, capping an emotional rollercoaster over the course of four days as he was held hostage by a narrow faction at his conference. Dozens of Republicans followed McCarthy and Gaetz to defeat the adjournment, and McCarthy’s victory was finally at hand.
