Utah Jazz breakout star Lauri Markkanen is one of the favorites to win the NBA Most Improved Player of the Year this season, especially after hitting a career-high 49 in a 131-114 win over the Houston Rockets on Thursday scored points.
In addition to 49 points, the forward recorded eight rebounds, an assist and a block in 37 minutes as a sophomore. He finished 15 of 27 (55.6%) shots off the ground and 6 of 15 (40%) off the arc.

Before last night’s performance, the wing had the highest score of 38 points so far. He reached this mark twice. The 25-year-old scored 38 against the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 20.
Not to mention, the Arizona product cleaned the foul line and shot 13 of 13 (100%) overall. In 38 starts this season, Lauri Markkanen averages career bests of 24.5 points and 1.9 assists.

Along with 8.4 rebounds per game, the forward is shooting career-bests of 52.9% from the field and 42% from 3-point range. He has also scored 14 double-doubles so far this season.
“He’s done such a good job of continuing to work on different ways he can influence the game offensively,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said of Lauri Markkanen. “He just showed an understanding of how to play when teams are trying to take certain things away from him.”
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also shows incredible performances. His average career bests are 30.9 points, 1.6 steals and 1.0 blocks per game with the Thunder. On December 23, SGA recorded a career-high 44 points in Oklahoma City’s 128-125 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.
