Though LeBron James is just moments away from becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, he admitted the upcoming ultimate feat won’t carry as much weight as he and the Los Angeles Lakers are still climbing the hump.
In an exclusive interview With ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James expressed his desire to still get the winning marks he needs, noting that personal achievements “don’t feel right” for him when he’s at the bottom of the losers list.
“I want to win. [The losing is] doesn’t sit well with me,” James said. “I don’t like winning and it doesn’t feel right when it comes with losing. … So while we’re sitting here now as a franchise and as a team that’s under .500 — we’ve been playing good basketball lately, but we want and I want to win at the highest level. Breaking records or setting records or overtaking greats in a loss has never been in my DNA.”
This Friday, the Lakers clinched their third straight win, outmaneuvering the Atlanta Hawks 130-114 in front of the Crypto.com Arena crowd.
While the recent win serves as a cheer to still head into 2023 with a flawless 3-0 card, the ball club still has a lot of work to do. Looking at the table, Los Angeles (18-21) sit 12th in the hard-fought Western Conference and need two more wins to at least make the final table of the Play-In tournament.
James and his squad have a current assignment that’s too daunting to handle with Anthony Davis and several other key members of the rotation being inactive due to injuries, but they’re certainly determined to be back on the postseason stage after they failed disastrously last year .
With less than 500 points required to overthrow the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and take the historic throne that the retired great has held since 1984, James is genuinely looking for a much bigger picture – keep playing games and leaving his goalscoring contributes to the win Wins.
“I’m out on the ground trying to score the goal LeBron James admits being uncomfortable in getting accomplishments while losing: ‘It don’t feel right, when it comes in a losing effort’ In games that don’t matter, it felt so cheesy to me. So I thought I’m not going at all [to play],” he said. “So that never really mattered to me unless it was about winning.”
