Towards the end of last month we saw leaked renders of an upcoming Motorola smartphone that borrowed design cues and branding from Lenovo’s popular ThinkPad notebooks. At the time, we didn’t know much about the device. But Lenovo has now officially unveiled it at CES. As expected, the new ThinkPhone aims to be the perfect smartphone for ThinkPad users, offering seamless integration and a host of privacy, security and productivity features that you don’t get with other Android smartphones.

Motorola’s new Lenovo ThinkPhone features a unique design and rugged build similar to the recently released ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5. It features an aramid fiber back panel, aircraft-grade aluminum frame, and Gorilla Glass Victus protection on the display.

In addition, it is IP68 and MIL-STD 810H dustproof and waterproof. But these features don’t make the ThinkPhone unique as you can find them on some other rugged smartphones. Before we get to the differentiators, here’s a quick look at the ThinkPhone’s hardware specs.

Think 2 Think connectivity

Along with the flagship hardware, the ThinkPhone will launch with Android 13, offering a new suite of Think 2 Think connectivity features that seamlessly integrate it with Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops. These include:

Instant Connection: Phone and PC seamlessly detect when they are nearby and connect via WiFi. Unified Clipboard: Seamlessly transfer copied text or recent photos, scanned documents and videos between devices by pasting them into any app on the target device. Unified notifications: Phone notifications appear instantly in Windows Action Center. Clicking on a notification will automatically launch the corresponding phone app on the PC screen. File Drop: Easily drag and drop files between ThinkPhone and PC. App streaming: Open any Android application directly on a PC. Advanced Webcam: Take advantage of the powerful ThinkPhone cameras and AI features and seamlessly use it as your webcam for all your video calls. Instant Hotspot: Connect to the Internet directly from your PC with one click to take advantage of ThinkPhone’s 5G connectivity.

In addition to these features, the ThinkPhone comes with Microsoft 365, Outlook and Teams preinstalled to help users get started once they set up the device. Additionally, Motorola is working with Microsoft to enable push-to-talk capabilities via the ThinkPhone’s iconic red button, allowing users to communicate with the Walkie-Talkie app via Microsoft Teams.

Privacy and security features

The ThinkPhone also includes a range of privacy and security features, making it an ideal choice for business users. It leverages Lenovo’s ThinkShield security platform to ensure user data protection and has built-in advanced hardware-based and best-in-class AI-based security solutions such as Moto Thread Defense.

For businesses, Motorola offers the ability to easily deploy thousands of end-user ThinkPhones with Zero Touch and manage the full suite of device management solutions such as Moto OEMConfig and Moto Device Manager. The ThinkPhone also comes with the Moto Secure app, which serves as a hub for security and privacy features and allows IT admins to configure features remotely. But that’s not all.

To protect your data, the ThinkPhone Moto includes KeySafe – a separate processor running on Android that adds an extra layer of security to protect sensitive data such as passwords, PINs and cryptographic keys. It isolates this data in a tamper-proof environment, preventing loss in the event of a data breach.

Prices & Availability

Motorola’s Lenovo ThinkPhone will be available in the US, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Australia and select countries in Asia in the coming months. We don’t currently have exact pricing and availability details for the device, but we expect Lenovo to release more information closer to launch.
