Julen Lopetegui described Wolves’ unrecognized goal in their FA Cup clash with Liverpool as “impossible” after they drew 2-2 at Anfield in the third round.

Goals for Goncalo Guedes and Hwang Hee-chan came from either side of the finish line for Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah in a chaotic encounter on Merseyside.

But the visitors saw a late winner saved for Tote Gomes after a linesman’s call ruled the build-up corner shooter offside.

VAR couldn’t find a suitable angle to overturn the decision and so let it stand, in a call that infuriated Lopetegui, who later revealed his frustration.

“We saw it and offside doesn’t exist,” he told ITV. “It’s impossible but someone told him it was offside. We saw the picture and it doesn’t exist.

“The decision is wrong. I make mistakes every day, and sometimes they do too. Today we have the help of VAR and it’s a shame because I’m sorry it’s not offside.”

A brave performance but we couldn’t quite walk away with the win.

Lopetegui praised referee Andy Madley, telling BBC’s Match of the Day he was “very polite” when he and captain Bruno Neves made the decision after the final whistle.

“It’s good for me, it’s not common in Spain,” he added. “I like to talk just to show him there’s no offside. It’s very clear.”

The reputation for disallowing the goal was more difficult for Lopetegui after a botched clearance attempt by Tote Gomes previously effectively played Salah off the side for his own goal.

However, Lopetegui tried to draw a line under it, adding to ITV: “It’s happened now. We have to accept it. It’s a shame because I deserve to win against a fantastic team like Liverpool.”
