Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott believes assistant coach Denny Kellington is the “real hero” after Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest on Monday.

The Bills’ security collapsed on the field after Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins was hit, and Kellington gave Hamlin life-saving CPR before being rushed to hospital.

Doctors shared an important update on Thursday, saying the 24-year-old had “won the game of life” to add to a statement by Bills that declared Hamlin “neurologically intact”.

Kellington’s quick actions to perform CPR prevented tragedy, and McDermott took a moment to salute his actions in the team’s first media availability since Hamlin’s collapse.

“To put it in perspective, Denny is one of our assistant coaches. Just like our team, your team does mock drills for things like that, but that’s not what we’re here for. Practice pays off,” he told reporters.

“For an assistant to find himself in this position and taking responsibility and moving forward the way he has, it’s just amazing.

“The courage it took, you speak of a real leader and a real hero who saved Damar’s life. I admire his strength.”

The Bills are unlikely to complete their suspended Week 17 clash against the Bengals, but are back in action this weekend against the New England Patriots as the regular season concludes.

Playing so soon after such a traumatic event will be a tough scenario, but McDermott said Hamlin’s father, Mario, told them it was what his son would have wanted.

“I have no doubt that Damar would have wanted exactly what his father Mario told us he would have wanted. We owe it to Damar and his family,” he added.

The Bills are 12-3 this season and have already won the AFC East but have an outside chance to secure the No.

Back and do anything for 3.
