MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – At least one person was killed and 22 injured in a train collision on the Mexico City subway early Saturday, local authorities said.
The accident happened as the trains were being put into service, the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Twitter.
The person killed was a young woman, while the 22 injured do not appear to be in serious condition, the city’s security chief, Omar Garcia, told local media Grupo Milenio.
Four others trapped in a Line 3 carriage have been rescued and are in good health, he added.
A large number of accidents have occurred in the subway in recent years. The most serious was the collapse of a Line 12 railway overpass in May 2021, killing 26 and injuring more than 60.
Lack of maintenance was identified as one of the causes of the accident.
