Just days before the official release of Prince Harry’s much-anticipated memoir Spare, excerpts from the tome claim King Charles III. banned Harry’s wife Meghan Markle from visiting Queen Elizabeth as she lay dying at her home in Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Harry said he told his father in response, “Never talk like that about my wife,” according to reports after the book’s accidental early sale in Spain, per ABC news.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were visiting London on September 8, 2022 when the call came for the couple to hurry to Balmoral to see Harry’s dying grandmother, according to the Daily Mail. After an initial announcement from Harry’s representatives that he and Meghan would be traveling to Scotland, the plan was changed a few hours later; Harry eventually flew to Balmoral alone on a private jet, arriving shortly after the Queen’s death was announced.

As for why Meghan wasn’t allowed to accompany her husband, a source told the DailyMail it’s to keep the Queen’s circle as private and small as possible. The insiders claimed Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, has also been asked not to come to Balmoral. “Charles told Harry that it was not right or appropriate for Meghan to be in Balmoral at such a sad time,” the source explained. “He was advised that Kate would not be leaving and that the numbers really should be limited to immediate family.”

The news comes after a slew of explosive spare excerpts have already been leaked, with the most sensational being that Harry and William allegedly had a physical fight over Meghan. Harry claimed William called Meghan “rude” and “abrasive” during a heated meeting in 2019. “He grabbed my collar, tore my necklace and threw me to the ground. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which broke under my back and the pieces cut into me. I lay there groggy for a moment, then got up and told him to get out,” he wrote.
