Romeo Beckham, the son of former England captain David Beckham, completed a season-ending loan from Inter Miami to Brentford in January.

Beckham will be part of the club’s B team in hopes of taking his game to the next level. He had been coaching with the Bees since December, currently between seasons with North American clubs, and was impressed enough to secure a more formal deal by the summer.

The 20-year-old was previously in Arsenal’s youth team and joined Inter Miami in 2021 shortly after his 19th birthday after a break from football. He has since played regularly for Inter Miami II, making an unofficial debut for the club’s first-team in a pre-season friendly last January.

Romeo is the first Beckham child to follow his father into professional football. Older brother Brooklyn used to play for LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain and eventually Arsenal in their youth but stopped playing football at 15 when the Gunners released him.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, like his father, Romeo is primarily a right midfielder or winger. In 2022, he made 20 appearances in MLS Next Pro, essentially Major League Soccer’s reserve league, scoring two goals and recording an impressive 10 assists.

“He came from Inter Miami with the aim of working with us in the final season. Romeo has performed incredibly well, he’s really settled into the culture and the group that he’s become a big part of,” Brentford B coach Neil MacFarlane said.

“I love his set pieces and the way he behaves on and off the pitch. He’s been able to get fitter during his time with us and is now in a good position to step forward after joining us on loan.

“He’s very technical and he’s someone who can move and cross the ball quickly. He is also a very good finish and can play for us in many positions, which is also gratifying.”

Beckham’s ability to get close to Thomas Frank’s first-team will depend on how he fares in the coming weeks and months.
