Bad news for pastina fans: American brand Ronzoni is stopping making the tiny pasta shape. The reason? After an Instagram post by Ronzonithe company’s pastina supplier told them they would stop producing the beloved product as of January 2023.
“It wasn’t a decision we wanted to make,” the brand said in a statement. “We searched extensively for an alternative solution, but could not find a viable option… As a result, we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue this product.”
While Ronzoni isn’t the only pasta brand selling pastina, their unique shape is – though says the company they are five-pointed stars, we think they look more like flowers – has made them a favorite among consumers. In fact, some found the news so disappointing that Petitions to return the product started popping up just hours after the announcement.
Due to its small size, pastina is known for its versatility. Often added to soups like minestrone or eaten on its own with butter and cheese, it’s a favorite meal for parents. As a result, it’s a nostalgic, comforting treat for those who grew up with it. Though Ronzoni’s version is being shelved for now, fans shouldn’t lose all hope. “We haven’t given up,” said a spokesman for the brand. in a statement to Marketwatch.
In the meantime, you may need to find your adorable flower-shaped solution elsewhere. Here are three items for your home that, while not as tasty (or edible) as a heaping bowl of pastina, are just as sweet.
