As a space nerd that I am, I often envision a museum filled with the most important objects ever sent into space. We couldn’t possibly build a place like this, but we can speculate as to what human artifacts deserve a place in our imaginary space museum.

Most things sent into space are of a useful nature and now have little practical value unless they still work. Our artifacts orbit the earth and sun, sit on the surfaces of planets and moons, and even fly through interstellar space.

Some of these relics are more valuable than others, and by valuable I mean historically, nostalgically, or scientifically. I’m not suggesting for a moment that we somehow collect these artifacts and sell them at auction. They should be left alone and appreciated from afar. And of course, a significant number of these relics could never be recovered, at least not with our current level of technology.

To create this list, I reviewed my favorite moments in space history — and consulted astronomer Jonathan McDowell for what I might have missed.
