TikTok users regularly complain about lost hours on the platform, especially at night. To address these concerns, the company is testing new sleep reminders that include the option to set notifications when it’s your bedtime and mute notifications during the recommended seven hours of sleep. TikTok confirmed to Alaska Green Light Blog on Friday that the new sleep reminders will be tested with select users worldwide.

Screenshots shared by a product information company show that the new feature appears under the “Screen Time” settings in the app. Users who take the test will see a new “Sleep Reminders” option. The app says sleep reminders help you “know if you’re hitting your sleep time on TikTok so you can go to bed when you want to.” After choosing a sleep time, you will be reminded to close the app when the clock reaches that time. TikTok also mutes push notifications for seven hours after your bedtime to help you avoid distractions.

A company spokesperson said TikTok is continually working on new ways to support user wellbeing and that this new tool builds on its current digital wellbeing capabilities. The app was launched first Screen Time Management Tools in February 2020 and has since rolled out additional features aimed at giving users more control over their app usage.

Last June, the company launched an in-app tool that allows users to control how much time they spend on TikTok in a single session by allowing them to schedule regular screen breaks. By default, it suggests break reminders of 10, 20, or 30 minutes, although users can set reminders for a custom time if they want to join longer or shorter sessions before the notification pops up. The app has too limited night notifications for youth accounts. Users aged 13-15 will not receive push notifications after 9:00 p.m., and users aged 16-17 have turned off push notifications after 10:00 p.m

Thanks to TikTok’s unmatched ability to distract and engage users advanced recommendation technologyits addictive nature has been the subject of numerous psychological studies. So, it’s not surprising that TikTok is testing additional tools to help users better control their TikTok usage. As with any other testing feature, it is unknown when or if TikTok plans to officially roll out the sleep reminder feature on a larger scale.
