Wyre’s crypto payment network is no longer supported by cryptocurrency wallet MetaMask, with reports that Wyre will soon cease operations.

Users were urged not to use Wyre on the mobile aggregator by MetaMask, who said, “We are working on extension removal and appreciate your patience.”

On Jan. 5, MetaMask announced on Twitter that Wyre had been taken away from its mobile aggregator, which allows users to buy cryptocurrency directly from its digital wallet.

The release states that MetaMask continues to support a variety of other payment gateways, including Transak, MoonPay, and Sardine. According to MetaMask, the services are accessible via Apple Pay, bank cards, and bank transfers.

Giannaros reportedly said: “We will continue to do whatever we can, but I want everyone to brace themselves for the possibility that we may have to wind up the deal in the next few weeks.”

The information was released shortly after Wyre CEO Ioannis Giannaros reportedly told employees the company would soon be ceasing operations.

MetaMask did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph’s request for comment. Wyre has not responded to several press inquiries from Cointelegraph.

Wyre, a major cryptocurrency payments company, was founded in San Francisco in 2013 and sold for nearly $1.5 billion last year. American e-commerce startup Bolt decided to buy Wyre in April 2022. Bolt eventually decided to terminate the agreement in September 2022 amid this year’s severe crypto bear market.
